BMGA Official Order of Merit ranking list

Just working on the first updated rankings for the new season and some surprises instore when they are published tomorrow (the KMGC have never looked stronger)... watch this space...

The updated Strokeplay Order Of Merit has been released following the first two events of the 2013 BMGA tour - the Star City Open and the British Crazy Golf Open.

What a list - KMGC in the top 3 slots and 4 out of the top 5 (5 out of the top 6 and 8 out of the top 16 places). But massive news is that Alex Perfectpar Pragnell moves into the top 16 (and Category 1 status) at number 15 and Will Donnelly also makes his Category 1 debut in at number 5!!!!

Outstanding performance from all of the club!! VTK!!!

Sean, I should have taken you up on an explanation about the points scoring system. I guess we get one for showing up (so I am honoured to have a monster 3 points), how do we get the larger points? Is this due to sub 40 games?

First up - how many points does an event carry?

Our Majors (British Championahip, Open and World Crazies) all have a ranking quota of 1000 points

Our secondary events (such as the Masters and for example the English / Scottish Open's) have a minimum ranking quota of 600 points

All other events have the ranking points made up by the number of the top 16 players taking part. Each of the top 16 carry a number of ranking points into the event 'pot' ranging from 100 points for the number 1 to 5 points for the number 16. If you have all of the top 16 playing then there is a maximum allocation in play of 730 (which is why the secondary events are a minimum of 600 points but could go as high as 730).

So how do you get the points?

Every player is guaranteed 1 point for playing.

The winner receives the full amount of the points on offer – i.e win the British Open and you get 1000 points (Adam for example received 600 for his win yesterday).

The rest of the field get apportioned points based on how close their tournament 18 hole average is to the winners – the closer you get, the more points you can get. There’s a complicated formula that works this out:

=X-(100*(Y-Z))

X is the total ranking points available for the event, Y is the players average, Z the winning players average.

Apply this to the weekends event and the points awarded are as follows:

When you hit the negative points these all get set to the standard 1 ranking point.

So ultimately the better you play and the closer you get to the winners average the more points you get. There are always more opportunities to grab points at the Majors due to the large pot available.

Simple enough really!!

Matchplay rankings are different and are allocated purely on position in each event

NB: Season only Rankings are ‘simpler’ and are based more on personal improvements for players rather than being linked to the winners scoring. A breakdown of how those points are allocated can be found on the BMGA websites SOR posts.

Thanks Sean, I get it, believe it or not. So for relatively minor tournaments (and I stress relatively as winning the Masters is an amazing feat) you need to be closer to the champion to get points, and yesterday you need better than a 39 average.

I look forward to my season ending score of 6! The home advantage of the Kent Open may help though.

NB: This season saw changes in the category splits with Category 1 unchanged (made up of the top 16 players along with any players winning BMGA tour events across the 2012/2013 season). Category 2 has been reduced to feature players ranked 17 to 32 inclusive and Category 3 now features all other players on the BMGA tour.

I wouldn't know Alien, despite being one of the 'veteran' players in the BMGA now, some points of the ranking system have always been a bit of a mystery to me, mainly as I don't play enough of the Tournaments to feature at the top end so I haven't bothered trying to learn it!  
As for 11 in the top 32, that figure will be higher again next year, outstanding though it is this year considering the amount of BMGA players, I would say the KMGC has the cream of the BMGA & long may it continue!

I think maximum is actually less than 6000. It's the 2 best tournaments from 2012 + 4 best from 2013 and seeing as there are only 3 majors (carrying 1000 points) per year, the maximum 2013 total must be lower than 4000...
So Michael's total is made up of something like:
-2000 for 2012
-1000 for British Open
-Upwards of 900 for both British Champs and World Crazies
-600 or so for his next highest scoring tournament (I guess maybe British Crazy Golf Open?)

You're right 5520/6000 would be pretty impressive but 5520/5700(ish) takes the Mickey.

I'm sure Sean can shed some light if I've got anything drastically wrong...

Although looking at the stats, across the 9 ranking tournaments Michael's average in TOTAL was only 4.7 shots behind the highest total possible (ie if you add on how many shots he missed winning by). Of course it helps to win 5 of the events!
