BMGA 2010 Season Only Rankings (SOR)

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland have this year temporarily suspended their search for the Higgs Boson (the 'god' particle) to concentrate their efforts on something far more important (and complex) - the quest for the ultimate Season's Only Rankings formula!!!

Boffins across the world have been working tirelessly to work out the second most complex formula in sport (only surpassed in it's mind-boggling-ness by the BMGA Official Rankings!) and believe they have finally cracked it!! The Collider is currently being revved-up (I believe that's the technical term) with the intent to collide the masses of data from the National and English Opens into each other in an attempt to create the new SOR spreadsheet! Although scientists believe it may take about two to three years to collect enough data to discover the SOR unambiguously, a spokesman for the BMGA reckons they should be sorted out by teatime today.

So while we await the results of the scientific breakthrough to be sent down from CERN here's a breakdown of the key parts that make up the SOR in 2010:

• Playing in a tournament - 50 points
  Relative result in a tournament - 10 points per place
  Aces - 10 points each
  Hatrick of aces - 50 points
  Sub 36 rounds - 10 points each
  Official Course Record - 10 points
  Consecutive improvement round by round - 25 points per round
  Player average better than tournament overall average - 10 points
  Personal Best - 50 points

There will be prizes at the end of the year for top player, top rookie, top junior amongst others yet to be determined!

A strong early performance from Team Kent and with a little luck I'm confident we can climb the rankings and de-throne the MMGC. How unthinkable it would be if they occupied all the podium positions at the end of the year! I'm sure we have enough talent to prevent that.

Midlands are a good bunch but we won't have to worry about them by the end of the season.
Hastings are the real rivals but we'll only see where we stand with them after a few outdoor events. Remember Tim's not even with them anymore...

Hastings are having a few issues getting their numbers up at present - Tim has left them, Jo has also gone (playing as in independent player at the moment) and Olivia has officially left to join a club in the Czech Republic. And I think it's likely that Ant & Peter may set up a Worthing club at some point this year.

Running season long, the Season Only Rankings (SOR) were first introduced in 2009 with the aim of giving all players a more immediate and season specific breakdown of where they stand in relation to all the players that participate in tournaments each year. The SOR do not replace the Official Rankings (which are still the ultimate benchmark for players) but run in tandem with the official rankings.

The focus of the SOR is to reward players for their results across the year, with particular emphasis on Personal Best performances, improvements round to round within any given tournament along with specific points for aces and a variety of other rewards. The breakdown of how the rankings are made up are listed below:

Playing in a tournament - 50 points
Relative result in a tournament - 10 points per place
Aces - 10 points each
Hatrick of aces - 50 points
Sub 36 rounds - 10 points each
Official Course Record - 10 points
Consecutive improvement round by round - 25 points per round
Player average better than tournament overall average - 10 points
Personal Best - 50 points

There will be prizes at the end of the year for top player, top rookie, top junior amongst others yet to be determined!
