13 IS DEFINITELY LUCKY FOR SOME AS ADAM KELLY RETAINS THE KENT OPEN AT A RECORD BREAKING EVENT IN SIDCUP

The Kent Minigolf Club (KMGC) hosted their thirteenth Open and a record breaking 44 players took to the greens at the home of the Kent Open – Sidcup Family Golf Centre – for the ninth year in a row once again making it the biggest one day event of the season.

The weekend teed off with the Kent Invitational Tournament on Saturday 10th November which saw Tony Kelly victorious, winning his first KIT title, pipping Adam Kelly and Sean Homer in the process. Adrian Amey won the Guest KIT as a total of 21 players took part in the traditional curtain raiser for the Open on the Sunday.

Sunday 11th saw a fantastic field of players from across the minigolfing community – including 4 players from the Azores representing the UPDM Minigolf club – battle it out across 3 rounds at the tournament course and Adam Kelly became the second player in the Opens history to successfully defend his title (only Seth Thomas previously had managed this incredible feat) and become the 13th Kent Open Champion, defeating his Club Captain and 3 time champion at the event, Sean Homer who took the silver medal with Andy Exall in third place.

With an impeccably observed 2 minutes silence at 11am, led by Dave Gomm from Planet Hastings, and a wealth of debutants and prizes given out, the 13th Open was a tremendous success.

Speaking after the event, Sean Homer, Captain and Founder of the Kent Minigolf Club reflects on another fantastic Kent Open in Sidcup “First off let me say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our events this weekend. The players, the team at Sidcup Family Golf and of course all my wonderful clubmates (and even the weather after a mixed start to both days). I’m proud of what we at the KMGC have created over the years and like to think that the Kent Open (which brings to a close our season) demonstrates everything that is great about the game we play. I think it’s no surprise that once again our Open has been the biggest one-day event of the year by a long shot, and second only to the World Crazies in terms of players take part this season. The KMGC have been the club that many seem to love to hate (the price of success I suppose) but hey, we can’t be all bad given that they still keep coming back to take part in the Open every year.

Secondly, what a weekend it’s been. The weather was shall we say a bit mixed at the start of each day (thanks to Ted and Steve in
particular for lending a hand this morning to get is ready for the tee off) but once again the clouds departed, the sun shone and the greens at Sidcup witnessed some exceptional Minigolf from the gathered masses. It was great to see so many debutants at the event - to have our friends from the Azores taking part this year was a particular thrill along with the Welsh Club contingent. Great to see anew club thriving, bringing in new talent to the game. Reminds me of the early days of the KMGC (we all have to start somewhere).

Our Open has always aimed to be entertaining and inclusive. I think its no co-incidence that the two biggest events of the year are both single ball competitions (that also happen to be organised by the same team). These events are a real leveller and gives players at all levels a chance to compete. Whether you like the Kent Open ball or not, it is the same for all and means that players just have to concentrate on line and pace and combatting the nerves when there are Doubles and trebles and prizes galore to challenge for. I think that we have brought a lot of people into the game of Minigolf – and will continue to do so. I know there are other clubs that do the same and I applaud all your efforts in attracting new people to the greens.

I hope you all enjoyed our event. And of course I hope you had fun on and off the course. We certainly enjoyed your company and your support.

See you all again in 2019!

Sean."
