The KMGC took to the greens at The Green in Hither Green (SE13 6UR) today to take part in the first competition to grace the new Swedish Felt course (designed, built and run by Nick Sandqvist).

The KMGC Swedish Felt Championship - Sunday 21st February 2010 File

So after a few sighter holes with the KMGC gaining exclusive access from 10am this morning - the KMGC Swedish Felt Competition kicked into action. The format was simple - lowest round of the day (with the holes in 'difficult' competition mode) would take the club honours (and the champagne kindly supplied by Nick) and set a new course record for the venue.

Round 1 would see the lanes all in their 'easier' mode, whilst rounds 2 & 3 would be in 'Extreme' mode!! For those that haven't played Swedish Felt before, there are two settings across several of the holes, one setting 'easy'(as in difficult!) and the other 'hard' (as in VERY VERY difficult!!). If you imagine a lane for example where you have to play through a 8 inch gap in an obstacle to get through to the hole, in the harder competition setting a cover would come down over the obstacle to reduce the gap to say 5 inches. A great idea as it can make holes more accesible to the general public in one mode, whilst giving a tougher challenge to the pro-player in the other mode. Anyway, I digress.

So with the groups set (Group 1 - Andy 'Mr.X' Exall, Tony 'TK Max' Kelly, Marion 'Double Trouble' Homer and Adam 'AK47' Kelly / Group 2 - Sean 'Freebird' Homer, Marc 'The Force' Chapman and Scott 'Donkey Gringo' Lancley) and the 'easier' mode in place round one teed off. An hour later and the first round scores were in:

Tony - 39
Scott - 40
Marc - 43
Adam - 49
Andy - 49
Sean - 51
Marion - 57

With a steadying coffee break taken, the players watched as the Extreme mode (competition settings) were put into place for the final two rounds that would decide the champion and a possible new course record. And 2 hours later, after the dust settled following the final two rounds, the scores on the doors were as follows (best rounds for each player in reverse order):

Marion - 66
Scott - 53
Adam - 52
Tony - 48
Marc - 46
Andy - 44

And the winner, with a new course record:

Sean - 39

A fantastic days play - thanks to Scott for coming up with the idea and the format and galvansing us all to get over to Hither Green (with the Green actually turning out to be the closest course for several of us!!). Special thanks go out to Nick for his wonderful hospitality (and the generous gift of the Champagne!) and I can only urge everyone to get over to the course ASAP to try out this fantastic set-up!

VTK!

Really enjoyed the day Very Happy great idea of yours DG

shame about my useless scores but started to get in the flow right at the very end so hopefully will get better with a bit more play on the course Smile

tony reckons he should get a share of sean's winnings for his 39, and if we had a golf style handicap system he definitely would have won lol!

see u next week, those who are going Cool

Well done everyone. This is the kind of thing that makes KMGC the best club in the UK...if not the World! Only a year on and I know I made the right decision joining -Tony & Adam fantastic new additions especially to the active competitive unit of the club. Looking positive for some good collective results this year including the Smeeth Cup & BMGA Club Championships!

See you all soon,

I agree Force, not sure about the SC though, I reckon PHCGC will struggle for 9 players now Tim's done the off& doesn't look like returning, it'll be a shame if it doesn't happen.
